If you log in today you can find like 10 alliance players & 25-30 horde players, most bots. I've logged in and been literally the only player on the server sometimes, after checking both factions with a /who 1-80. Ironforge.pro's statistics is funny to look at for Ashbringer. TL;DR Please do the same for Ashbringer, or perform more mergers.

Returning player - which server, which class ? I played classic a lot. I have a lvl 60 rogue, lvl 60 druid, lvl 60 priest (horde) and lvl 70 Paladin. My paladin has epic flying and Karazhan gear (tank) and was my main (kinda) in classic. He is also on a completely dead server (Morgraine). I'm not 100% sure if a feel paladin anymore.

The servers are a total mess right now, especially PVP servers, look at ironforge.pro. I would have preferred another solution that allowed for more server size choice but they would have had to do it long ago. This is something and will help people play the game without making them pay extra so IMO it's a good thing.

I find a few threads here and some other places that had different servers as the go to for classic era players…then there is the HC scene, which make a server “alive” but there isn’t at all what Im looking for, since that community (for what I gathered) can’t do trading, AH, group up with non-HC players, etc…
